A macro lens, a light pad with a high colour rendering index and a cheap copy stand get you surprisingly close to a lab scan. The hard part is not resolution but flatness: curled film robs the corners of sharpness long before the sensor becomes the limit.
I tape a thin anti-newton glass over the strip and shoot at f/8, then invert in software. Dust is the enemy — a soft blower before every frame saves an hour of retouching later.

Modern cameras meter well, but an incident reading tells you what the light is, not what the scene reflects. For snow, backlit portraits and dark interiors that difference is a whole stop or more.
